General 🚀
ChatGPT launches Plugins: OpenAI’s most important launch since ChatGPT itself, you can now use a single chat box to access any service/software in the world from ChatGPT (browse the web via Bing, work with your documents, order food on Instacart, make reservations on OpenTable and Kayak). Are we going to start seeing people spending 90% of their time on the internet in ChatGPT?
Microsoft has Business Chat in Office 365 and ChatGPT via OpenAI
Google will bolt on a chatbox to Google Chrome, integrating search, Travel, Finance, Maps, Gmail, YouTube and more from one place.
Apple will put a connected chatbox in your iPhone and Macbook.
Early collaborators include Expedia, Instacart, Kayak, Klarna, OpenTable, Shopify, Slack, Wolfram, and Zapier. Waitlist here.
Packy McCormick: “Attention is All You Need” - OpenAI's ChatGPT Plugins and the emergence of an Apex Aggregator
Google’s Bard is out and fails to impress: Bard uses a lightweight and optimized version of Google’s own LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications).
GitHub launches Copilot X, an AI pair programmer for the entire development lifecycle:
chat and terminal interfaces for context-aware conversations to explain existing code, help fix bugs, and learn.
voice-activated instructions.
keeps track of your work, suggests descriptions, and helps reviewers reason about your changes with a code walkthrough.
tailored docs - personalized documentation to support learning.
Canva and Adobe launch generative AI tools in the same week, both have launched tools include:
Canva: text-to-slide deck, image-to-design template (e.g., auto-creating a fully-designed flyer using an image), more AI-generated text supporting 18 languages, and text-to-image
Adobe: text-to-image, replace sections of an image, generate custom vectors, brushes and textures, edit videos and 3D models using natural language
Unity’s AI Beta Program: Unity is building an open and unique AI ecosystem that will put AI-powered game-development tools in the hands of millions of creators.
Nvidia announced generative AI cloud services: designed to help businesses build and run generative AI models trained on custom data and created for “domain-specific tasks”.
What to Watch in AI: ten companies AI founders and investors are keeping a close eye on.
Lex Fridman interviews Sam Altman: OpenAI CEO on GPT-4, ChatGPT, and the Future of AI (warning: it’s 2.5 hrs long).
Superhuman: What can AI do in 30 minutes? Ethan Mollick gave himself a test: see how much he could get done in 30 minutes using the AI - and achieved what would previously have taken at least a day. How do we utilize our newfound powers? Do we work more or less? Who benefits from this? Companies or employees? What happens to leisure time?
Sarah Guo: Every Company Needs An AI Strategy: a non-technical intro for any business person to LLMs, opportunities and threats, AI strategy hierarchy, second order impacts and more.
A twitter user built a chatbot that preserves his late father’s personality and voice: it’s pitched as an emotional support tool but reactions are mixed.
Education and the Future of Work 📚
An Early Look at the Labor Market Impact Potential of Large Language Models: a paper from OpenAI and the University of Pennsylvania claims 80% of the US workforce should prepare for at least some impact by AI models
Exposure is defined as whether access to a GPT or GPT-powered system would reduce the time required for a human to perform a task by at least 50%
Better paying work has a higher chance of being automated by LLMs.
Science and critical thinking have lower exposure.
(Research) Generated text is very hard to detect: is detection unsolvable? Researchers stress test detectors, we build a 11B size paraphraser (DIPPER) which can 1) paraphrase long text; 2) use context outside inputs like user prompts; 3) control output diversity.
They find that paraphrasing drops the accuracy of one detector from 70.3% to just 4.6%, while preserving the semantics and quality of the input LM generation.

Startups and Tools 🛠️
Mozilla announces Mozilla.ai and $30M initial investment: A startup — and a community — that will build a trustworthy and independent open-source AI ecosystem.
Luma raises a $20M Series A: their mission is to democratize 3D generation - Hollywood quality, photorealistic 3D for everyone.
Replit: talk to Replit in natural language to make software.
Metaview: uses AI to automatically write your interview notes for you so you can save time and focus on high-quality interactions with candidates.
Consensus: GPT-4-powered, scientific summaries.
ChatLLaMa: a ChatGPT-like interface built on the 7B parameter Alpaca dataset.
Tech 💻
The Coming of Local LLMs: there is still a need to be able to run smaller models on devices that have constraints on memory and processing power. Being able to run models at the edge enables creating applications that may be more sensitive to user privacy or latency considerations - ensuring that user data does not leave the device.
Chinese tech giant Alibaba and AI video editing platform RunwayML both announced big text-to-video models
How much would it cost to build a GPT-4 competitor from scratch? Stability AI CEO Emad Mostaque thinks around $200-300M.
Fun/Other 🎉
Coca Cola’s invites Digital Artists to “Create Real Magic” using AI: the program and crowdsourced marketing initiative emerged from the new collaboration between Bain & Company and OpenAI to help enterprises adopt generative AI technology.
OpenAI-powered app from MSFT will instantly transcribe patient notes during doctor visits: DAX Express aims to help reduce clinicians’ administrative burdens by automatically generating a draft of a clinical note within seconds after a patient visit.
